Living in Mumbai, you can’t wear anything but natural fabrics. So a bulk of my closet is made of linen and mul. Lately, I have been drawn to silk — the light, watery kind, not the stiff sari type. I trawled stores online until my common sense tapped me on the shoulder and punched me in the face.
India manufactures silk and samples for high-end brands and designers find their way to the export surplus market. However, you only get one or two pieces in each design. That means I can’t list them here, but I can tell you the stores and urge you to visit them frequently.
To a lazy girl like me, silk gifts an outfit sophistication much desired by a woman in her 30s who can no longer rock a tee.
Here are a few pieces I’ve bought lately.
This is one of my first silk pieces, which I bought from Jcrew.com. It’s turned out to be so reliable and versatile, I am going to have it duplicated in rose pink, canary yellow and ivory.
Now this top, I wouldn’t normally buy from a store or if it was made from any other material. But it’s a beautiful midnight blue and shell buttons still make me weak in the knees. At 150 bucks, I wasn’t going to let a classic pass by.

Remember last year or so, when owl pendants and charms were everywhere? Before I could find one worth buying, they were coming out of everyone’s nose and ears, and that felt a little yucky. But I like them on this shift dress which encourages me to wear print and is of a malleable silhouette.

Now, I pride myself on my masculinity and would not go anywhere near bows. However, I also tend to get into a bit of a style rut and keep buying basic pieces in friendly colors. I was drawn to this one because of the colour and the material, but was pleasantly surprised by how good this silhouette looks on me. When things cool down, I look forward to wearing it with a navy blue linen blazer.

Here’s an interesting print and pattern. Cropped top with pockets up front, and this grey smudged paint pattern. I battled over buying this one for a bit, and finally shoved myself out of my safety zone. I don’t know how and where I will wear this one, but it has to be done.

If I am not careful, my wardrobe would be full of long shirts to throw over skinny jeans, basic tanks and linen trousers. This kind of shirt works best when I have to step put of office for an interview with someone creative in my city’s perpetual summer. It’s fuss-free, but tony. With a bit of kajal, I can pretend to have made an effort.
I moan so much about ’90s fashion coming back that I forgot the nice details it had. Like these pleated epaulets and pocket details.
